How effective is the combination of your product and ancillary texts?

How effective is the combination of your product and ancillary texts?

The BBC defines a film distributor as “In terms of features, a distributor is generally an organisation who handles the theatrical release of a film in a particular country as well as the marketing and circulation of films for home viewing.”

Trailers are a crucial part of marketing for any film. They enable the public to get an idea of what the film will be about without giving away too much, however give much more insight to the audience than a promotional poster does. They are designed to leave the public on a kind of cliff hanger, making them want to see what happens in the full film.

There are many means of exposing your film. The key factor that needs to be considered is audience. Depending on who the trailer is aimed at appealing to has a lot of impact of what kind of advertising is used. If the audience is a late teen age range it would be good to use lots of online adverts such as on Facebook and TV channels appealing to that age such a comedy central and e4. If it were to be an older audience newspaper advertisements and relevant radio stations such as Radio 2 and absolute would be more appropriate.

Audience research is a crucial stage before any advertisement commences as this will give the distribution companies much more idea of who they are trying to appeal to. For example the woman in black was very cleverly and widely advertised spending between 30-60% of their £12 million budget yet it was shown to be worth it when the film made £3,153,020 on the opening weekend in the UK alone.

We have chosen for our film to be classification 15. I feel our film is suitable to be classified as this as the British Board of Film Classification states for horror "At 15 there can be strong threat and horror as long as there is no sustained focus on sadistic or sexualised threat." Our film goes by these standards and conditions. Things included in an age rated 15 film may be: - strong violence - frequent strong language (e.g. f***) - portrayals of sexual activity - strong verbal references to sex - sexual nudity - brief scenes of sexual violence - discriminatory language or behaviour - drug taking.
